Milling Local Lumber. RePURPOSING Nature.

Welcome to Campy’s Designs

Campy’s Designs was founded in 2015. After college, I became interested in timber framing and wanted to build a cabin from scratch, starting with the logs. I took multiple classes on timber framing and building and after completing my first timber frame I had extra wood slabs left over, which I thought would be great for furniture. After posting the remaining slabs for sale online, I received many requests for other types of wood slabs, which jump started the business.

Since 2015, I have learned much more about wood milling and the drying process of lumber, seeking out learning opportunities for new techniques to increase my knowledge base. One of the most important aspects of providing customers with the highest quality wood slabs is ensuring the wood is dried properly. In order to dry this wood quickly and efficiently, I built two solar kilns and all of the slabs I sell are kiln dried. Normally, hardwoods take a year per inch of thickness to air dry, but these kilns speed the process, decreasing the required drying time to two to four weeks to get the moisture content down between 8-12% (industry standard).

Mission:

As Campy’s Designs grows, my mission is to create and to help people create items with wood that will withstand the test of time. Anyone can go to the store and buy a table, but there is no meaning behind it. Buying wood that was milled locally, building that table yourself, and adding your part of the story; and then sharing the story is what it is all about. I am happy to work with customers in order to help them complete their projects, whether they are first-time DIYers or carpenters/contractors.

Zero Waste Goal:

One of my main goals with the business is to produce zero waste as a result of milling. I take locally milled trees and once the slabs are cut, anything considered a scrap wood byproduct is given away for firewood or to entry level carpenters to learn with. The sawdust byproduct is given to local farms for bedding, or to local composters to breakdown and reuse in gardens.
